HVAC fan… to run 24/7 or not?

This is a question to be decided by personal preference. We’ll give you the pros and cons; you can decide what works better for your family and your budget.

Is it better to turn off the HVAC and run the HVAC fan all the time…

Or is better to or set the thermostat at your chosen temperature and let the HVAC system turn on and off through the day?

Yes to 24/7

• A constantly running fan will keep the temperature more consistent, a benefit for areas that normally are too warm or too cool.

• This approach puts less stress on the HVAC system, meaning it lasts longer.

• It keeps air flowing around the clock for people who suffer from asthma or other breathing problems.

No to 24/7

• Your electricity bill will climb if you use the fan all the time, especially if your system was manufactured before the latest labor-saving devices.

• You may need to buy more air filters. The non-stop fan will make the indoor air cleaner, but it also will send more dust and detritus into the filter.

• The added workload will cause the fan to malfunction or die sooner than normal.

Another option: Choose a blend of the two approaches and control your indoor climate without blowing the budget.
